The DeVos’ Commitment to Education

Over the last three decades, Dick and Betsy DeVos have made enormous donations to the political landscape, these donations have been tagged with a lot of criticism and attention from the public. But these donations have not been significant compared to the charitable contributions they have made that adds up to $139 million over the course of their lifetimes.

Before Betsy DeVos was confirmed for the U.S Education Secretary position, her contributions to the school choice causes and the Republican candidates were investigated. The couple went ahead to publicly show how their philanthropic giving of millions of dollars was being distributed through their foundation.

To give you an overview of their donation; in 2015, according to tot he Foundation website, the couple donated $11.6 million to charity. This is two times the $5.3 million that was given to campaigns in the last five years that Betsy handed to the Federal government.

The couple is extending their family history of supporting the Republican politics that has been ongoing for the last decades. This started out by Dick DeVos’ dad Rich DeVos, the co-founder of Amway. In 2015, the family was in the Forbes list of America’s Top Givers list when they handed out $104 million to charities.

After Betsy DeVos was appointed the U.S Education secretary, she visited an all-girls charter school located in Washington, together with Jordan’s Queen Rania, and the first lady Melania Trump. After her statement, DeVos went ahead to solidify her stand on school choice by celebrating what the Excel Academy was doing because it was meeting the needs of the parents, the children and the community. Betsy was able to note that this kind of system was empowering parents to select education environments for their children.

After her Washington visit, Betsy DeVos visited Miami-area schools that had different educational offerings. There are schools which are private, public elementary school, Christian Schools, two institutions of higher learning, and the Pitbull-started charter school.

Betsy also visited CARE elementary school located in Overtown section of downtown Miami that was initially known as Christian Academy for Reaching Excellence. The elementary school is part of Florida Tax Credit Scholarship that offers corporations and individuals tax incentives to donate money to companies that provide scholarships for religious and private education expenses and tuition.

The supporters of the program have stated that students who come from low-income families are given an opportunity to access education, while critics assert that the system is privatizing public education, violating the tenet that exists to separate the state and the church. DeVos also managed to visit SLAM (Sports Leadership and Management) Charter Schools, Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Science at Florida International University.

The DeVoses have always had a sweet spot for education. They have made financial support to various education causes that have been in environments of adult support, academic rigor, supervision, and accountability. The couple is benefactors of an urban Christian school known as Potter’s House.

Betsy DeVos: Challenging the Status Quo

In school, one of the biggest problems that we seem to have is keeping up with the entire class. At one point or another, a student is going to fall behind and need to ask some type of question in order to catch up. The problem can be that the class has already gone so far past the problem that insecure students may feel as though they cannot ask the question. Even worse, children that have given up on the entire process may not even attempt to learn the information that they feel has gone over there had. These students can express a large degree and frustration in the learning process and may even act out in other ways. Betsy DeVos understands the growing gap that is present in the world of education. She pursued her post as Secretary of Education because she knew that she had something to offer to the leadership of this organization.

One of the first things that happened when Betsy DeVos was appointed to her position was that people became fearful that she did not understand the education system. They knew that she had no experience with the public-school system and they worried that she would become detrimental to its continuance. The problem is, why would they feel so worried about a system that is functioning in good order? The answer is that this system has not been functioning well for a long time. They simply want to maintain their hold on the nostalgia that is associated with sending their children to a public school. Unfortunately, nostalgia is not enough to guarantee that children will receive a quality education.

While Betsy DeVos did not send her children to public school, it is entirely erroneous to imply that she does not have any type of knowledge of the system. She worked on the board of education for Michigan over a number of years and served on various organizations throughout her tenure within that state. She knows what it takes to run the systems and she understands the atmosphere surrounded them. Even as Secretary of Education she knows that there is a standard that could be obtained by these facilities, she simply does not believe that they are capable of reaching those standards any longer. Another fact, she believes is that such standards should be elevated as they are no longer compliant with the world population standards.

The wave of tomorrow is going since be centered around different types of education. Children are going to be enrolled in public schools in the future, but there are going to be a growing number of children seeking alternative methods of education through different avenues. Charter schools, private schools, online schools, and many other types of institutions will become more normalized. In fact, it’s entirely possible that the attendance rate for these types of institutions will normalize and begin to match. And maybe then the public-school system will feel a pressure to change the way that they do things and assess the learning level of their student base.

How End Citizens United is Championing for a Voice for the American People

End Citizens United has continuously made headlines, particularly due to its increased involvement in the nation’s politics and elections. In recent news, the PAC applauded the By the People reform package, which was presented by both Congressman John Sarbanes, the chairperson of the Democracy Reform Task Force and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. The package is a set of proposals aimed at fixing the nation’s broken campaign finance system, empowering the American voter and reinforcing the ethics laws.

The reforms are expected to ensure government accountability, especially after reports of several ethical violations by the current Trump Administration. Also, they are anticipated to support the investigations into Russia’s involvement in the 2016 election and allegations of campaign finance infractions. According to Tiffany Muller, the political system is undoubtedly rigged. She emphasized her point by stating that politicians are owned by the special interests with the ability to splurge large sums of money in a bid to sway elections to their favor. As such, Tiffany acknowledged The House Democracy Reform Task Force for taking action in an attempt to give the American People a voice.

End Citizens Role in the Congressional Elections for 2018

In recent times, End Citizens United has become one of the popular political action committees in the United States. The PAC’s name is drawn from the 2010 Citizens United ruling by the Supreme Court, which gave way to unions and corporations to donate unlimited amounts of money to their preferred candidates. A recent article by USA Today revealed the large sum of money that End Citizen has raked in from donations in preparation for the midterm congressional elections in 2018.

In the first quarter of 2017, End Citizens United collected an excess of $4 million. This amount is part of the $35 million it aims to raise. EUC’s target for the upcoming congressional elections is higher than the $25 million collected for the 2016 election. In this year’s first three months, nearly 100, 000 contributors participated whereby 40,000 of them donated for the first time.

Tiffany Muller, ECU’s executive director and president, said that the PAC’s objective for the 2018 elections is to elect reform champions for campaign-finance to Congress. Towards this effort, the PAC has assisted in urging its donors to contribute $500,000 to support Democrat Jon Ossoff’s congressional bid. Although End Citizens United stated that it is still evaluating the 2018 races, it expressed a high possibility for defending Democratic Senators like Jon Tester of Montana and Ohio’s Sherrod Brown.

Muller revealed that the average contribution for the first quarter hit $12. She also highlighted the frustrations of Democrats regarding Trump’s win and their determination to oppose both his nominees and agenda. In addition, Adam Bozi, EUC’s spokesperson, cited that the PAC had built increased connections orties to campaign-finance watchdogs.
