Waiakea Water to Adopt Fully Degradable Bottles

As from next year, Waiakea Water is scheduled to begin using fully degradable bottles. This move will help reduce the packaging’s lifespan by 98%. According to reports, the 100 percent recyclable bottles use TimePlast, a new plastic material capable of reducing the lifespan of plastics to around 15 years from 1,500 years. The company will be the first to use these bottles. According to Ryan Emmons, Waiakea’s Chief Executive Officer and Founder, coming up with the bottle required approaching polymers differently. Usually, it takes regular plastics thousands of years to degrade because of their high chemical bonds. However, the TimePlast technology substitutes traditional chemical bonds in plastic bottles with less complicated links. This leads to nano-degraded and re-engineered plastic that easily degrades after a few years.

Most recently, consumers have begun avoiding bottled water probably because of the plastic bottles used in packaging. Additionally, plastic bottles lead to excess waste and pollution, and Waiakea Water is determined to change this narrative. The company obtains its water from a naturally alkaline and pure source and later sells it in eco-conscious packaging. Waiakea water has an exceptional pH and mineral composition. The Mauna Loa Volcano filters this water and gives it rich electrolytes such as magnesium, calcium, potassium, and sodium. More importantly, the water comes with a unique silica amount of about 30mg giving it a silky and soft feel. According to studies, people who drink 10mg of silica in water every day are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Waiakea water has a remarkable pH value of 7.8 and 8.8, and this makes it naturally alkaline. The facility that packages Waiakea water uses 33% renewable energy. The packaging is one of a kind made using 100% high-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate. When it comes to the manufacturing process of the packaging, lesser energy is required compared to regular plastic bottles. Moreover, during the manufacturing process, carbon emissions are reduced by over 90% compared to ordinary plastic bottles. The fact that the packaging is BPA-free is another win. The company closely works with Pump Aid to donate clean water to less privileged families in Africa.
